The cultivable oranges of Crete, come mainly from the varieties Merlin, Navel, and Valencia which are perfectly adapted to the environment of the island. The peculiarity of the soil-climatic conditions of Crete makes the Cretan oranges rich in juice, which is sweet in taste and with characteristic aromas. In addition, the effect of the sea favors the production of early-quality oranges.
Oranges are rich in vitamins C and A, sugars, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, and a variety of antioxidants. A moderate orange covers 116% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C. Vitamin C is associated with strengthening the body's defenses against viruses and diseases.
Choose tight oranges, heavy for their size, to be juicier. The oranges are quite preserved. You can keep them at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Their juice and zest are kept in the freezer.
